It is August in the Fredericksburg-Spotsy area and it is hot. We have endured months of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, mandates, changes, and a total upheaval of our day-to-day lives. Moreover, our children (and us parents) have had to learn how to manage distance learning, manage our day jobs, and deal with the uncertainties of the fall—and the uncertainties that lay ahead. It has been hard to say the least. As I have continued working and serving my clients, I have observed families pulling together, local communities supporting one another, and folks just trying to get by as normally as possible. I have also watched and been a part of a real estate market that has fought to stay strong in Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania. I am so proud to be an agent in this region!

While I see strength through adversity in our region, I also see day-to-day folks who are desperate for things to do, especially parents! Not only it is August and hot, but with pool restrictions and continued social distancing recommendations, parents are looking for any new ideas they can get!

Let me tell you, I discovered something pretty cool recently—virtual tours—and not the kind you think (real estate tours), but real virtual tour of museums, historical sites, and more. With the onset of COVID-19, nearly every major museum created virtual tours for the public to explore for free. I mean for real, there are places I have always wanted to go, and right now it is a great time to take advantage of exploring and learning virtually. You can tour Machu Picchu, The Louvre Museum, The Vatican, The Great Wall of China, Guggenheim, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Eiffel Tower, and much more.

But that is not all! Our own region offers some excellent virtual tours too and provide us viewers with the opportunity to learn and explore all sorts of things from the comfort of home. So grab the family, whip up a few snacks, and start exploring—and hey, the kids just might learn something!

Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania Battlefield Tours

The National Park Service has put together a number of virtual tours including Fredericksburg Battlefield, Chancellorsville Battlefield, Wilderness Battlefield, and Spotsylvania Battlefield Virtual Tour. While their tours consist of informational pages, each virtual tour stop features photographs, descriptions, and links to trail guides (when available). Additionally, Battlefield Trust has put together a 360 degree virtual tour offering panoramic views from downtown Fredericksburg to Prospect Hill.

Virginia Humanities Project

If you are history buff you are going to love what Virginia Humanities has done. They have produced more than 60 virtual tours of historic Virginia sites including Monticello, Montpelier, Mount Vernon, the Virginia State Capitol, and much more.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps

The National Museum of the Marine Corps launched a virtual tour that includes guided audio and starts at the entrance to the Leatherneck Gallery and takes views through the various installations inside the museum. Plus, visitors can enjoy other online exhibits and stories including “A Tribute in Silver” and “From Devil Dogs to Pluto the Pup: World War II Marine Corps Aviation Insignia.

Colonial Williamsburg

Great for the kids, Colonial Williamsburg has a nice online program featuring multiple virtual tours including the Capitol, Governors Palace, and Art Museums. Their site also features learning resources, a robust offering of YouTube videos, downloadable activities, quizzes, colonial recipes, and much more.

The Chrysler Museum of Art

The Chrysler Museum of Art did a nice job with their virtual offerings. This vast online offering features numerous virtual tours, exhibitions like the Lloyd DeWitt for a three-part virtual exhibition tour, how-to kids crafts like ways to make colorful glass artworks in your house, plus downloadable activities for both kids and adults, stories, games, playlists, videos and much more.
